Sign Up
If you don’t already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play. Tap on the app to open it on your device, and touch the Sign up Free link. This link will open up www.schoology.com/register on a browser for easy registration from our website.
Then follow these instructions:
- Touch the Instructor button.
- Fill out your First Name, Last Name, Email Address or Username, Password and Confirm Password.
- Enter your Country, State, and school name or school zip code into the School or Zipcode field. Then, hit Search. Select your school from among the results. If your school does not appear, tap on 'Request to Add your school' to create a new school.
Note: Schools under a System Administrator may or may not allow a user to register on their own. If you are unable to register on your own, please contact your System Administrator for login information. Schools under a System Administrator may also require a Faculty Access Code during the registration process. Click on 'Don't have a code?' if you don't know your faculty access code.
Login
If you don’t already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play. You can use an email address or username to login on the application, depending on how your account was set up. See below for instructions:
Email Login
- Click Email Login.
- Enter your Email Address (e.g. johndoe@schoology.com) and Password.
- When complete, tap Login.
Username Login
- Click Username Login.
- Start typing the name of your school. The name, ID number, city, state, and zip code for the school should appear below.. Tap on the name of the school to choose it.
- Enter your Username (e.g. johndoe) and Password.
- When complete, tap Login.
Note: Single Sign-On users will be forwarded to their school page after they choose their school on the application, and they will login with their SSO credentials. This same process applies to schools with Google Sign-On. SSO and Google SSO users should expect to see similar behavior as seen when logging in through their website.
Recent Activity
The Recent Activity area displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology Home page. To view additional posts, simply scroll up or down.
Create a New Post
You can create course, group, and personal updates from the Android application. To create a new post:
- Tap on the Create (+) button on the upper right corner of the screen.
- Select 'Update'
- Click 'Post to' and select where you would like to post the update
- Type your update.
- Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File
- Tap the Post (>) button on the upper right corner to complete.
Create a New Comment
To reply to updates on the app:
- Tap on the 'Comment' button to the left of the post.
- Enter your comment.
- Tap the Post (>) button on the upper right corner to complete
Create an Assignment or Discussion
- Tap on the Create (+) button on the upper right corner of the screen.
- Select 'Assignment' / 'Discussion'
- Click 'Post to' and select where you would like to post the update
- Type the Title and Description and add the Due Date
- Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File
- Tap the Post (>) button on the upper right corner to complete.
Create an Event
- Tap on the Create (+) button on the upper right corner of the screen.
- Select 'Event'
- Click 'Post to' and select where you would like to post the update
- Enter the Date (When/End Date) , Title , Description and Who can RSVP
- Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File
- Tap the Post (>) button on the upper right corner to complete.
View and Add to Replies
To view existing replies to a post:
- Tap on the Text bubble button below the post to see the Comments
- Tap on the Create (+) button on the upper right corner of the screen
- Enter your comment.
- Tap the Post button on the upper right corner to complete.
Note: If you’d like to cancel your post or reply, you may tap the trash icon to go back, or hit the back button on your device. Please remember to refresh the screen to see the latest information, and tap the Home icon to return to the main menu.
You may view file attachments to Updates when the format is compatible with the device. Tapping on the file will download the file onto your device, where you can open the file to view it. You can also view the status of the download in the notification bar of the device. Tapping on a link attachment will open up a browser with the listed URL.
Delete a Post
To delete your post, touch and hold on the post you would like to delete. A popup will appear to either confirm or cancel the deletion. Please note that you may only delete a post you’ve created.
Upcoming
The Upcoming area displays events, tests/quizzes, assignments, and discussions whose due date has not yet passed.
Events
Users may view the event listed in the Upcoming area.
Tests/Quizzes
Users may view the event listed in the Upcoming area.
Assignments
Users may open the assignment and add posts/replies.
Discussions
Users may open the discussion and add posts/replies.
Note: If you’d like to cancel your post or reply, you may tap the trash icon to go back, or hit the back button on your device. Please remember to refresh the screen to see the latest information, and tap the Home icon to return to the main menu.
Push Notifications
Users can choose to receive a push notification on their Android device whenever an important piece of content is added to a course or group.
Here are some examples of the types of occurrences that would generate a push notification:
- course update post
- group comments on updates and discussions
- new assignment or discussion post
- receive a private message
When a notification is sent to your device, you will see an alert display on your screen (as in the image below):
Touching the notification will take you to that piece of content within the Schoology Android app.
Disabling and Re-Enabling Notifications
To enable notifications, make sure you've downloaded v2.0 of the Schoology Android app from the Google Play Store. After installing the update and logging into the app, notifications will be automatically enabled for you on that device.
To disable notifications:
- Select the Settings option in the Schoology app.
- Deselect the Notifications option.
You should stop receiving notifications immediately.
To re-enable notifications:
- Select the Settings option in the Schoology app.
- Select the Notifications option.
You will now start receiving notifications.
Customizing Notification Style
You can optionally choose to have your device vibrate, play a sound and/or flash its LED indicator when a notification is received.
To adjust these settings:
- Select the Settings option in the Schoology app.
- Select Vibrate, and/or Play a Sound, and/or Flash LED indicator.
Managing Which Notifications You Receive
To change the notifications that you receive:
- Select the Settings option in the Schoology app.
- From there, select the Account Info under Account Settings.
- You can customize the notifications you receive by adjusting the various settings under the Notifcations tab.
- Be sure to click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the panel.
Courses
The Courses area lists all of the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a course section, tap on the name of your choice. You may view the following course items by swiping the screen horizontally:
- Assignments
- Online Tests/Quizzes
- Files/Links
- Discussions
- Albums
- Pages
Course Updates
Course updates show the Recent Activity for a particular course section. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.
Course Upcoming
To view Upcoming events, tests/quizzes, assignments, and discussions for a particular course, swipe to the right to access the course Upcoming area. For more information, please see Upcoming.
Assignments
The Assignments area lists all of the tests/quizzes and assignments in a particular course. To view course assignments, swipe to the left until you reach the Assignments screen. You can tap on an assignment to view details and comments, or tap on a test/quiz to view the test/quiz profile.
Create an Assignment
You can create an assignment by clicking on the Create button on the upper right corner of the screen.
Tests/Quizzes
The Tests/Quizzes area lists all of the tests/quizzes in a particular course. To view course tests/quizzes, swipe to the left until you reach the Tests/Quizzes screen. You can tap on a test/quiz to view test/quiz results directly from the device. You can grade tests/quizzes from the Results page as you would grade them from the web.
Discussions
The Discussions area lists all of the discussions in a particular course. To view course discussions, swipe to the left until you reach the Discussions screen. You can tap on a discussion to view, post, and reply to comments.
Create a Discussion
You can create a discussion by clicking on the Create (+) button on the upper right corner of the screen.
Course Grades
The Grades area displays the Midterm/Final grades and Grading Period grades by grading category. You can access the Grades section through the left hand side bar by swiping horizontally. Then choose the course you'd like to access the grades of.
Add or Edit Grades
You can view graded items by tapping on the title of the test/quiz, assignment, or discussion. To add or edit grades:
- Tap on the row of the graded item. A list of the course members will appear.
- Tap on a member’s name to add or edit the grade.
- You can use the sliding bar to enter a point value, or tap on the field to manually enter a grade through the keypad.
- You can add an optional comment by tapping on the Comment to the right of the point field.
- Select the checkbox to display the comment to the student, or uncheck the checkbox to keep the comment only visible to you.
- Tap the Ok button to confirm the information.
- Repeat these steps for each student in the course.
- And Save Changes to complete.
View Dropbox Submissions
You can view dropbox submissions by tapping on the title of an assignment. If a student has submitted a dropbox submission, a Dropbox link will appear below the student’s name.
- Tap on the Dropbox link. A list of student submissions will appear below in chronological order. Submission date and time will also appear, as well as a Late/On Time indicator.
- Tap on a revision. The student submission will appear below.
- Tap on the student submission you would like to view. Tapping the submission will download the document onto your device.
- Once download is complete, you can view the file directly from your device.
Note: If you’d like to hide any dropdown information, you can tap on the header (e.g. Revision, or Dropbox).
Additional Note: Grades will not appear for grading periods that have not yet started. Graded items without a grading period will populate under the appropriate grading category under No Grading Period.
Groups
The Groups area lists all of the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a group, tap on the name of your choice. The following information is available under a particular group:
- Updates
- Upcoming
- Discussion
Group Updates
Group updates show the Recent Activity for a particular group. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.
Group Upcoming
To view Upcoming events for a particular group, swipe to the right to access the group Upcoming area. For more information, please see Upcoming.
Discussions
The Discussions area lists all of the discussions in a particular group. To view group discussions, swipe to the left until you reach the Discussions screen. You can tap on a discussion to view, post, and reply to comments.
Messages
The Messages area lists all of received and sent mail in your Schoology account.
Received Messages
The Inbox displays the received messages by default. A shaded background indicates an unopened message. To view the message, simply touch the message you would like to open.
Sent Messages
To view sent messages, swipe to left from the Inbox screen, and touch the message you would like to open.
Compose and Reply to Messages
To compose a message, tap on the Create button on the upper right corner of the screen while in the Inbox screen.
- Begin typing a name in the To field. The field will auto-populate with users to whom you may send messages. To select a user, simply tap on their name from among the list.
- Enter the subject of the message.
- Enter the content of the message.
- Tap the Post (>) button on the upper right corner to complete.
To reply to a message, open the message and tap on the Create button on the upper right corner of the screen.
Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not be able to send messages to everyone in the school directory.
People
The People area allows you to view all of the members in your School Directory in alphabetical order by last name. To view a member profile, simply tap on the user’s name.
Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have access to view the school directory.
Profile
The Profile area displays your current profile information. The following information is listed in a user profile:
- Profile picture
- Name
- School name
- Email or Username
- Recent Activity
To view personal updates, simply scroll down the Recent Activity on your user profile. These updates behave in the same manner as Recent Activity and Course and Group Updates.
Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have access to personal updates.
Grades
The Grades area lists all of the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. To access the grades for a course section, tap on the name of your choice. The following information is available under a particular course section:
- Midterm/Final grades
- Test/Quiz, Assignment, and Graded Discussion grades organized by grading period and grading category
- Test/Quiz, Assignment, and Grade Discussion grades with no grading period
Add or Edit Grades
You can view graded items by tapping on the title of the test/quiz, assignment, or discussion. To add or edit grades:
- Tap on the row of the graded item. A list of the course members will appear.
- Tap on a member’s name to add or edit the grade.

You can view dropbox submissions by tapping o the title of an assignment. If a student has submitted a dropbox submission, a Dropbox link will appear below the student name.

- Tap on a revision. The student submission will appear below.
- Tapping on the submission will download the file onto your device.
- Once download is complete, you can view the assignment submission directly from your device!

Logout
The Logout button is located on the Home screen. You may logout at any time by tapping on the Home icon on the upper left corner of the screen. On the Home screen, the Logout icon is located on the upper right corner.
Note: You will stay logged-in until the application until you manually logout or uninstall the application.
Comments
